I'm crying and this is just a trailer😭😭. Makes me think of love. I lv it. The agent for this kid is doing amazing cause hes in everything lately 😂. Terrence Malick's return to narrative form was unexpected to me, but I was looking forward to this film with a lot of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I was just about the only one. The film opened tonight at my local theater, playing on the biggest screen they have, and only about 15 others showed up to watch it with me. As this film is more conventional than his recent features, I think a mainstream audience would very much enjoy it, and so it's really too bad that it's been ignored. I encourage everyone to go see it in theaters before it's gone.
Malick is still at his peak in terms of cinematography, but you might have expected his ability to get convincing performances out of actors to have waned from lack of use. Not so; while the performances are heightened to suit Malick's romantic style, they're also perfectly naturalistic whenever he needs them to be.
Although we're back on the guide rails of a traditional structure, the way in which Malick tells a story has not changed. We have the same obsession with nature imagery, with numerous lengthy shots. In this case it's mostly used for the purpose of straightforward symbolism, though the film's themes make use of it as well in ways that are more subtle. That "A Hidden Life" follows a less experimental approach also makes it more obvious that Malick has begun to repeat himself. Viewers will recognize many shots and visual metaphors from his previous films, perhaps most directly the highly-choreographed "couple meeting" shot. Much of the music is reused as well, with Malick continuing his reliance on Górecki to provide emotional weight. Not that this is ineffective - the small crowd at my theater found itself in tears at several points - but I think Malick is a bit too reliant on quoting himself to get the point across, and I'd like to see something entirely fresh from him. One bright spot was in the camera work. Though we see many of the same meandering camera movements as before, it's sharply edited to direct our attention to the narrative's subjects.
Surprisingly, as Malick's works (after "Badlands" tend to be very independent, the film reminded me of several from other directors. It's hard to imagine this film being made without Scorsese's "Silence" and Paul Schrader's "First Reformed" from the last several years. Several scenes and the use of camera angles in general owe a lot to Dreyer's "La passion de Jeanne d'Arc" as well. The strongest thematic resemblance of all, in my mind, was to "Calvary" 2014. Even if Malick had these films in mind as he made "A Hidden Life" the references are limited, and he delivers something genuinely new and unique for us to appreciate.
On its surface, the story is the simple one we've seen in a thousand forms. It's a story about human freedom and the responsibility that comes with it, and about what it means to be complicit. Themes like these are at the core of our understanding of people like Sophie Scholl, and they echo through our cultural memory down from the Nuremberg trials. Malick offers us something a little more subtle than that, although it's hard to notice at first. First we're asked to embrace the frailty of the human being, Franz, on the screen, and to understand him as a person who (like us) cannot see his place in history, and can only act here and now as he sees best for himself and his family. How can we understand sacrifice as a possibility if we can have no clear picture of the totality of the world in which we act?
"Through faith" seems to be the answer Franz and his wife Fani give us. They are devoted Christians, and the film's close examination of the faith they practice makes this the most explicitly religious among Malick's canon of spiritual films. Fani expresses the belief that all things will work together for their good, because they love God and endeavor to do his will. As we watch the film, it's very tempting to try to guess whether or not their trust will be rewarded. But no matter what happens in the film, we leave the theater to live - like them - lives of not-knowing, waiting, and hoping. What happens if God doesn't answer?
While that possibility might seem devastating at first, Malick has something hopeful and universal to offer. We're reminded in one of Malick's trademark voiceovers that "rain falls on the just and the unjust" reflecting trust in "the way of grace" he alludes to in "The Tree of Life. What we see in Malick is faith that our actions will be granted meaning in history, but he offers no visible guarantor of that trust. He shows us how this kind of faith helps Franz and Fani make difficult decisions, and cope with their lives' most challenging moments. Some of us may be tempted to think that kind of simple trust simplistic, but the framing of the film doesn't give us that option. We look at their actions as readers of history. When we affirm that their lives have meaning, we validate the faith by which they led those lives.
The film is a truly beautiful experience, and I urge you to see it on the biggest screen you can. While this is a relatively simple feature and occasionally self-indulgent, it's a rare treat to see the work of a great filmmaker doing what he does best. If you've been put off by Malick's previous slow-paced, more experimental films, I think you'll find this one much easier to watch. It doesn't feel its length at all (3 hours 5 minutes, according to the theater staff - possibly lengthened since it was shown in festivals) and parts of it are tightly edited enough to make my heart pound. It's a thrilling story told by our greatest creator of cinematic poetry.

How i love this! can't stop watching it. I would put it in that chicks wrong hole. A higher form of filmmaking! Malick must be cherished. I love that movie. Can't wait 2 watch this. Some of the scenes are filmed at my friends house, and some are filmed at the downtown place i pass everyday when i drive to school. Crazy to see them in this.

The last Jedi was terrible, i cannot understand how anyone can say thats the best film of the trilogy. Terrence Malick thank you for bringing sanity to the grandeur of love between a man and a woman. This generation and the social genocide of LGBQT+ is just the tip of the iceberg of things to come. The global elitist are a stones throw from histories greatest genocide.

De onderzoekende en weerkaatsende blikken van de protagonisten, vaak in de vorm van point-of-view shots, verlopen immers via de toeschouwer. Als Merlant of Haenel in de camera blikken zien ze niet elkaar, hun oogcontact is imaginair. Dat gezegd hebbende vraag ik me af: heeft iemand het al over de fijne onderhuidse aders gehad van Haenel? Fascinerend. Qua stijl is er gekozen voor veel close-ups (portretten) en voor een kleine scherptediepte, wat altijd iets schilderachtigs geeft. Je ziet deze aanpak overigens wel vaker bij films uit die periode (denk aan Dangerous Liaisons). En dan is er nog het script, dat ik lange tijd ook erg goed vind. Bijvoorbeeld de bijpersonages: de bediende is perfect in haar rol en de moeder kan je ook begrijpen dankzij één enkele dialoog uit het begin. Zoals door anderen al is opgemerkt vliegt Sciamma aan het slot enigszins uit de bocht, met teveel uitleg en expliciete duiding. De voorleesscene van Orpheus en Euridicee vond ik nog wel sterk, maar dat die man in het museum dan het schilderij gaat uitleggen is jammerlijk, en dat geldt ook voor het shot van bladzijde 28, dat veel te nadrukkelijk is. Het beeld van Heloise in bruidsjurk, verdwijnend onder de blik van Marianne, is in mijn ogen wel weer heel mooi (met name dan esthetisch, voor de film had het ook bij de laatste keer kunnen blijven). Een andere misser is het playbacken van die zangscene op het strand, dat is gewoon een hopeloze regiekeuze. Een aantal schoonheidsfoutjes dus die Sciamma maakt, het eindproduct staat echter nog steeds als een huis. Dit zou wel eens de film kunnen zijn waarmee ze haar eigen stem definitief gevonden heeft.

At the same time, the finale seems crucial for what Portrait has to offer: catharsis. It is at this moment that the painful experience of an impossible love, the bitter feeling of disappointment or regret which colors the first scene of the film (and which perhaps haunts Marianne) gets softened or even replaced by an awareness of eternal love - through feelings of gratitude, acceptance, pride and bliss that indeed love hás been found, it hás been lived, and shared, in the first place. Who knows what the ex-lovers, having had that life-changing experience and with their hearts ignited, will encounter in years to come?
Despite the undeniable ache in my heart, I didn't leave the cinema feeling bitter (the effect that The invisible life of Euridice Gusmao had on me. The women in Portrait, and their love, don't get crushed by patriarchy, they live their lives to the fullest possible, individually and in solidarity. Several films that get mentioned as front-runners for Oscars and Golden Globes I've seen by now, yet I have found no story as modest, nor acting as retained, while being that impressive and impactful, both intellectually and emotionally. Sciamma doesn't tell a story, like other directors do, she has written a poem. And honestly, I couldn't care less about old stories from old men right now.

I always have been a big fan of animation, and is sad to see how under-appreciated is it Japanese animation is usually seen as stupid stories about giant robots and monsters, with lots of sex and violence in stupid plots without sense, but if you dare to look closer, you will find true works of art, gems that shine over all the underground crap that gives the anime a bad name (like "Vampire Hunter D. Those gems make change my mind about anime, like "Cowboy Bebop " the movies of Hayao Miyazaki, or this movie. Unlike the other anime movies, this movie don't have a lot of action scenes, or giant robots or monsters 's just a story of ordinary people that learns that they could be better and make heroic things thanks to the events that happen in their lives during the Christmas. And this movie is full of sincere emotions, and works very well as comedy as much as drama that wasn't enough the animation is very good, full of details in the scenery and the characters. Even the elements of magical realism make this movie more original and interesting. This is my favorite anime movie of all the time and it is one of the most artistic and beautifully made in all the long story of the Japanese animation. Oustanding.

It's Christmas time in Tokyo and as three homeless companions wander the streets, digging through trash for dinner, they come across an abandoned baby. The spirit of Christmas drives them to pick her up and the rest of the movie details their journey to find the parents of the little tyke.
This might very well be the most down to earth movie director Satoshi Kon has ever made, which is saying a lot about his usual fare. It contains no supernatural elements, no crazy trips into the cracking psyche of man, nothing really out of the ordinary. Yet it is strange enough so as to be recognizable. The plot relies heavily on happy coincidences, but often enough those coincidences are so out there that they have to be intentional, making the seeming laziness of the script into a stylish feature. I certainly had no complaints, the whole story was a blast to follow, especially because you really couldn't predict where it was going.
But, beneath all the craziness and oddness, Tokyo Godfathers is a character film and it pulls it off fantastically. All three of the eponymous "godfathers" are deeply layered, tragic, funny and, beyond all else, interesting personalities. Each one is as different from one another as day is from night, yet you can see what pulls them together. They're as interesting separately as they are in a group, but it's the group that drives the individuals to do pretty much anything. I was actually sad to see the film end, because it meant saying goodbye.
Tokyo Godfathers is an excellent film on many levels. It is a superb animated film, fantastic characters study and actually a pretty neat Christmas film as well. Definitely worth checking out.

It is important to note that, in Shimla Mirchi, “love” happens the instant a man sees a beautiful woman. It is also important to note that a woman’s most lovable attribute is her torso, hence why Naina wears crop tops almost exclusively throughout the film. Avi is frequently shown ogling her bare waist, because he’s in love. Avi’s problem is that he gets tongue-tied whenever he tries to tell a woman that he loves her. (Could the problem be that his instinct is to introduce himself to women he’s never met with “I love you” before “Hi, I’m Avi”? ) He takes job at Naina’s cafe in the hopes of getting to know her better. When he still can’t muster the courage to speak up, he writes her an anonymous love letter. Naina’s not interested in her own beau, but she sees the letter as an opportunity to cheer up her mom, Rukmini (Hema Malini), who’s lonely after her husband Tilak (Kanwaljit Singh) left her for a younger woman. Naina readdresses the love letter to her mom and has Avi deliver it — leading Rukmini to believe that Avi is her secret admirer. The high-concept story by writers Kausar Munir, Vipul Binjola, and Rishi Virmani yields a number of cute moments, as when Rukmini stops her dance practice to sneak after Avi, bells around her ankles jingling whenever she moves. When Naina realizes that Avi is way overqualified to work as her handyman, she jumps to the wild and funny conclusion that he’s involved in a nefarious international plot that inexplicably begins with the takeover of a small cafe in Shimla. There’s a nice relationship between Naina, Rukmini, and Tilak’s mother (Kamlesh Gill), who lives with them. Naina has cut off contact with her father, and even his own mother thinks he’s a jerk. They want Rukmini to rediscover her sense of self-worth, and the film doesn’t even hint at trying to reunite the family. Yet even the best elements of the film are good, but not great. The acting is fine, if uninspired. The story is cute but forgettable. Shakti Kapoor plays the quirkily-named Captain Uncle, who exists to move the plot along when the writers couldn’t think of a better way to do so. Then there are the elements that make Shimla Mirchi seem like it came out of a time capsule. The mistaking of lust for love and the objectification of Naina’s body are the worst examples. Captain Uncle makes some racist jokes about East Asian languages. Avi has a friend, Jude (Tarun Wadhwa), who rotates through a series of indistinguishable white girlfriends who don’t speak but are always wrapping themselves around him. He ditches the last one when he spots a pretty Indian girl in Desi attire and immediately falls in love with her (naturally). Shimla Mirchi feels like the product of a filmmaker who started his career back when times were different. When objectifying women was the norm. When you could crack racist jokes because there was no internet and few people outside your intended audience would watch your movies. There’s nothing outrageously offensive in Shimla Mirchi. Her latest, Panga, follows the everyday struggles of a sweet family whose matriarch returns to the athletic career she left to raise her child. Retiring from India’s national kabbadi team at age twenty-five wasn’t Jaya’s (Kangana Ranaut) plan when she found out she was pregnant. She had the full support of her husband Prashant (Jassi Gill) to resume her captaincy as soon as she was fit to do so. But when their son Adi was born premature and with a number of ailments, Jaya put all of her focus on raising her little boy. Seven years later, Adi (Yagya Bhasin) is mostly fit and increasingly independent. Prashant tells his son about the life Jaya had before she became a mom — a history that Jaya has evidently never shared with the boy. Understanding what Jaya sacrificed for the family and excited by the prospect of having a professional athlete for a mother, Adi convinces Jaya to try and make a comeback. Rather than manufacture a bunch of obstacles to put in Jaya’s way, Tiwari and her co-writer Nikhil Mehrotra keep Jaya’s journey realistic while mining the scenario for as much drama as possible. Doing so allows for an insightful examination of gendered divisions of labor within a household. Jaya threw herself fully into being a mom and a homemaker when Adi was born, but she still has a job outside of the house. Kabbadi teams in India are often sponsored by companies like railways, and Jaya kept her job selling train tickets even after her playing career ended. As capable and helpful as both Prashant and Adi are, the house is still Jaya’s domain. How is she supposed to transfer seven years of accumulated knowledge to Prashant in the days before she heads to training camp? While their lives obviously won’t fall apart if the beds go unmade, it goes to show how we undervalue the effort it takes to make homemaking seem automatic. Prashant’s promotion to household manager also highlights how removed many fathers are from the social networks that make child-rearing easier. He learns to rely on his neighbor and his cranky mother-in-law (played by Neena Gupta). He asks to be invited into the WhatsApp group for moms at Adi’s school. A theme Tiwari introduced in her first feature, Nil Battey Sannata, and revisits in Panga is that of children coming to view their parents as individuals, not just their caretakers. Adi is mature enough to understand that playing kabbadi makes his mother happy, and that her happiness will require some inconvenience on his part. Yet he’s not so mature that he’s above throwing a tantrum when his dad screws up his makeup for the talent show or sulking when his mom has to sit on the bench during a game. It’s solid character writing. What the story wants us to appreciate more than anything is that this family is nice. They are helpful, quick with a joke, and willing to make sacrifices for each other. They have supportive friends, especially Jaya’s former teammate Meenu (Richa Chadda) and her new teammate Nisha (Megha Burman). These strong bonds reinforce the feeling that this is a family that deserves happiness. The acting across the board is very good, with little Yagya Bhasin providing some great laughs. Panga ‘s kabbadi scenes are quite fun, emphasizing the teamwork required for success without feeling preachy. Selfishly, I would have appreciated a scene where Jaya explains the sport’s rules to Adi, but there’s more than enough context provided for kabbadi newbies like myself to understand the tension during the matches. This is a decent starter movie for Bollywood newcomers — and anyone in need of a cinematic pick-me-up. For her latest film Chhapaak (“ Splash “), Gulzar tackles another challenging topic, that of acid attacks on women. While informative, Chhapaak ‘s plot lacks emotional punch. Like Talvar, Chhapaak ‘s narrative is non-linear. It begins in 2012, as a brutal gang rape in Delhi turns public attention toward violence against women. Twenty-something Malti (Deepika Padukone) struggles to find work, years after her face was severely scarred with acid. A reporter eager to revive interest in Malti’s story connects her with Amol (Vikrant Massey), who gives Malti a job at the non-governmental organization he runs aiding acid attack victims. The job triggers a flashback to Malti’s own attack when she was nineteen. A much older family friend, Babbu (Vishal Dahiya), burned her when she rebuffed his marriage proposal. The acid scarred most of Malti’s face, requiring months of recovery and multiple surgeries over several years. The court battle to convict Babbu takes even longer. Malti’s dogged lawyer Archana (Madhurjeet Sarghi) is determined to see Babbu sentenced not just for the physical injury he caused but for attempted murder, in a move to force the courts to treat acid attacks more seriously than the law currently does. A surprising amount of Chhapaak ‘s story is devoted to the details of the court proceedings in Malti’s case and her subsequent petition for a federal ban on the sale of acid. Archana and her legal team debate strategies and counterarguments in long scenes where Malti isn’t even present. During trial scenes, Malti often sits quietly behind her lawyers without participating. It’s an odd choice to sideline the film’s marquee star for such scenes, which are more educational than they are emotional. They also take time away from aspects of Malti’s story that are underdeveloped, chiefly relationships within her family. There’s a simmering resentment between Malti’s mother and wealthy aunt Shiraz (Payal Nair), who pays for Malti’s surgeries, but we don’t know their history. We also don’t know anything about the relationship between Malti and her younger brother. In the aftermath of her attack, he’s ignored so completely that no one in the house realizes he’s developed tuberculosis. The siblings never have a conversation about how their lives changed because of what was done to Malti. The problem with the way Gulzar and co-writer Atika Chohan use the non-linear format in Chhapaak is that flashbacks to who Malti was before the attack are saved until very late in the film. Only then do we get a glimpse of her friendships and her dreams for the future. The acid attack changed Malti externally but internally as well, but holding back information about who Malti was means we only see her reckoning with her external changes, not her internal ones. I suspect some of this stems from the fact that Malti is based on a real woman who is still very much alive. 29-year-old Laxmi Agarwal survived an acid attack as a teen and later became a prominent activist and television personality. Perhaps in deference to Agarwal, Chhapaak ‘s focus steers away from its heroine’s internal struggles and family drama to her courtroom victories and romantic relationship with Amol. (With regard to that, Padukone and Massey do share a charming chemistry. ) That aspect of the story feeds into the thing that Chhapaak does best, which is encourage its audience to see past the damage done by the acid to the person within. The prosthetics used on Padukone are well-crafted, changing with each of Malti’s surgeries. Gulzar also cast real acid attack survivors to play the other workers at the NGO. Yet, even at the very end, Gulzar can’t resist centering Chhapaak on the issue rather than the characters. The film’s brief final scene (not a spoiler) introduces some new women who are splashed with acid, followed by a note that one of them died as a result, followed by a still of written statistics about acid attacks in India. No one would have assumed that, just because the film shows progress being made that the problem of acid attacks was magically solved, rendering this scene unnecessary. While Chhapaak deserves credit for shining light on a worthy subject, it could have been done in a way that was more narratively satisfying.
